André

When Nick leaned his cheek into my palm, I thought my heart might burst. It had been years since I’d thought about another man, since I’d dared hope.

Yet here we were. This beautiful, kind, funny guy wasn’t simply accepting my affection, he desired it. His eyes closed and I felt, more than heard, a rumble swell from somewhere deep within him, like the purring of a leopard, satisfied and at peace. He let out a deep sigh and his breath tickled the hairs of my arm.

I was a doctor, a scientist, a psychiatrist. I analyzed situations and people, their feelings and actions, their rational mind’s voice and their inner child’s cries. I gave guidance and advice based on data and information gleaned through process and control. My training taught me to never lead with my heart or allow feelings to cloud my judgment.

There was danger that came with that commitment to professional and medical precision. One’s own creativity and expressiveness, one’s emotional wellbeing, could become dulled to the point of being fully suppressed, like any skill that became lost to time and disuse.

But a heart was not a skill or a set of data, however much my logical brain might want to shove it into a neat box.

It was fire and rain.

It was a calm breeze and a raging tempest.

It was a tender touch.

And it made no logical sense—none whatsoever.

I couldn’t pull my hand away. The warmth of Nick’s cheek and his breath thrilled me, ignited a flame I thought had long flickered out. I’d never even tasted his lips, but they consumed my every thought. I let my thumb drift and barely graze his chapped skin; and with still-closed eyes, he pressed a tender kiss.

My world spun, my eyes watered.

This man I barely knew made me want …

In that silent moment, with his lips pressed into my skin, I knew I would never get enough of his touch, of his longing, of his desire.

His eyes fluttered open.

His hand reached up and gripped mine. I sat frozen, transfixed, held captive by his gaze as he leaned closer, so slowly, then pressed his lips into my own.

Everything vanished. The Ranch, the children, the remains of our dinner strewn about the table.

There was only Nick.

He stood, our lips still together, and took my face in both of his hands.

There was a tenderness, a vulnerability, in his touch. It surprised me almost as much as the kiss itself.

I’d been alone for so long. So very alone.

“You didn’t like me very much,” he said, cruelly pulling our lips apart.

“What? When?”

His lips curled. “That first day, last week. You looked at me like I was going to eat your children rather than help them.”

I lowered my eyes, but couldn’t stop a grin. “Maybe. Eat is a bit strong, but I thought—”

“What changed?” he asked.

“You came back.”

His eyes widened, along with his smile, and there were no more words.

We stumbled into the den, unwilling to part for even a moment, then tumbled onto the couch, Nick’s weight pressing down on me.
